Runnerhub
« on: February 09, 2015, 02:04:11 PM »
Over on Reddit, there is a subreddit called Runnerub (https://www.reddit.com/r/runnerhub) which is basically a "shared world" setup for playing Shadowrun.

It takes place in Seattle of 2076 and uses 5th Edition Shadowrun rules (mostly; there are some minor changes and things disallowed due to the nature of the beast.) The way it works is a GM posts up a game. Players apply for team slots for their character. The GM picks from those chosen. At the time of the game, everyone logs into Skype and Roll20 and the game commences. Each game is 3-5 hours in length (the shortest successful run I know of was under 20 minutes!) After the game, players and GMs each write up an "After Action Report" for entertainment and auditing purposes.

There are ~40-50 active players at any given time and 4-6 GMs. There are easily 15-20 runs a week. Due to my time constraints, I don't get in very many of them, but I don't mind. Between runs, there are In Character threads for characters to interact with one another and an "In Character" IRC chat (which I never use, since it's blocked here at work.)

Overall, it's a lot of fun. I encourage anyone who likes Shadowrun (or RPGs in general) but doesn't have time or a fixed schedule to look into it. I'll follow up this post with some of my previous AARs to give a feel for how things can go.

My first game on Runnerhub. I played Mirage, a Close Quarters Combat specialist.

Quote
AAR from Mirage

I was riding down the I5 when Jim ping me the information about a potential job. Wetwork, what I do best. I thanked him for the lead and headed home to prep for the meet.

First, I threw together a disguise. Not great, but it lightened my skin tone, raised my cheekbones and altered my jawline enough that I should be able to get by. I grabbed my go pack, hopped on my bike and headed Downtown.

The place was called Johnny Carlitos according to the ancient ARO. The physical signage just said "Italian." The job invite said to go in through the kitchen, so I headed around back to find a few others getting ready to go in.

A Troll answered the door and showed us in. The place was empty except for the Troll and one other guy sitting at a table in the darkness. He motioned us forward and we all moved over and listened to the pitch. Pretty standard stuff with one exception -- we had to accept or refuse the job before knowing anything about our target.

The others, an Elf Decker, a guy with massive Cyber-arms and a guy who wouldn't stand out at a Rave joked around a bit, then settled down when I said "Okay, I'm in." They each chimed in taking the job as well.
As soon as we heard the name, we knew why the pay was so good: Mercer. "SINs for the SINless" Mercer. The guy who got knicked a week ago because someone stashed some goods in his mansion then called the cops and told 'em where to find it. Yeah. That guy.

This wasn't going to be easy.

We got our upfront pay, then headed to a no-tell motel and got a room; bribing the guy at the desk to ignore that we had no SINs displayed.
Once settled, we started planning. We needed information, and 14k, the elf decker, started looking for it, in between raiding the mini-fridge for Yaeger-Mester. He's apparently pretty good, because even getting soused, he managed to dig up quite a bit of useful data -- guards, schedules, floorplans and the like.

Loader, the Cyber-Arm guy and I decided to check the place out up close and personal. We drove over and I checked the place out via lens while he jumped in a FlySpy and mapped out the building. Smooth as butter; we got more data, parked the 'spy in a chandelier, and headed back to the hotel room.

Meanwhile, the rave refugee called Caliburn, used his magics to scout the location astrally, zonked out in the back of the van. Well, tried to anyway. Apparently, this drekhead is afraid of Spirits. Whoever heard of a Mage afraid of spirits? He was spotted and beat up a bit when he returned to us, so I suppose he is somewhat justified, but it still left us handicapped.

Which was surrounded by KE.

Our drek-for-brains, drunk out of his mind and stimmed decker apparently forgot about GOD while doing his bit and nearly got fried. They traced him back to the hotel. Fortunately, he had enough wits about him to evac and evade long enough to not get nailed.
I'm getting ahead of myself, though. So, there we are driving the Bulldog right into the heart of a KE lockdown. People from the hotel are lined up outside, several of the poor scmucks already tied down. Doesn't pay to be SINless downtown. Loader, knowing the score, continues to drive by normally, not doing anything to draw attention to us.

It'd be nice to say the same about Caliburn. Our scared-of-spirits mage panicked and activated his Sword Focus, as if that was going to do him a damn bit of good against 30 of KE's finest. This, of course, draws the attention of one of the wagemages hanging out in the Astral and suddenly, there's an astral projection of Judge Fucking Dredd at my window asking us to please broadcast our SINs for verification.
After a brief moment of panic, which I'm sure looked like a fraggin' firework display on the Astral, we all broadcast and, luckily their scanners weren't the really good ones or I'd be dictating all this into a Deposition-bot.

Once cleared, we continued on our way and eventually found 14k zoned out in a McHughes three blocks away, passed out over what looked like his third cup of soykaf. We loaded him into the 'dog and went to find a hidey-hole to recover in.

During the downtime, I called Slippery Jim. He has ways of knowing things that need knowing so I figured he might be able to help. Turns out, he knew the place that was handling the Catering for Mercer's Last Party. For slightly less than my left arm would cost, he gave us the info and wished us luck.
Slowly, a plan came together. We'd get Caliburn a job with Betty's Bakery to help with the job. We'd stop the delivery van, zonk out the real staff and replace 'em with us and a few of Father Mercy's volunteers then go and do the set up at the mansion.

It was a terrible plan, but we had little time for anything better. It relied on luck and the ability to shovel bulldrek faster than they could process it...but it worked. It got us inside and, once the muckety mucks there started wondering why there were homeless men dressed as caterers wandering around, Cali redeemed himself by spinning a tale about Mercer using former inmates as Labor, giving them a chance to better themselves and half a dozen other things that left them all swooning over how cool Mercer is...and us off the hook.

I should mention the cupcake. I don't want to, but, for completeness, I have to. Somehow, the idea of setting a trap on his podium kept coming up. I kept shooting it down, yet it kept coming up. Finally, I agreed to is as a "backup plan." The rocket surgery idea was to put an autoinjector with something "Lethal" inside a cupcake and leave it some place where Mercer would find and eat it. Like his podium.

Loader jury rigged the trap up and that's how I ended up doing my physical check for guard locations while carrying the worlds ugliest cupcake on a silver tray. If it were my real face being seen, I'd have had to get surgery to take away the shame.

Anyway. That humiliation complete and Loader's check of the place by drone showed Mercer upstairs in his bedroom. His wife left the room, leaving him alone and us with a perfect opportunity.

Caliburn used his magic to render me unseen and I used my natural talents to sneak upstairs, past a couple cameras and guards and into Mercers room. One quick hit and he went down. I snuck out, gathered the crew and we piled into Betty's Van and left the scene of the crime.
A few hours later, we collected our pay and that was it. Now, it's a matter of laying low for a bit to see how bad the backlash gets.

This run was a bunch of runners hired by Horizon Media to take one of their Trideo stars out on a Real Live Shadowrun...while being recorded for mass production.

Run GM: /u/NotB0b
Mission Rewards: 8 Karma, +2 Street Cred, +4 Public Awareness, +2 Notoriety, 15,500¥
Mission Expenses: Dignity
Rating: 8. This run was a hell of a lot of fun. The pace was good, the action was very Pink Mohawk (as advertised!) and the characterizations were excellent.
There were two things that I dinged it for. First, getting a word in edgewise on Skype was difficult, with people frequently having to talk over one another in an attempt to be heard. This resulted in peoples comments being missed by the GM or just being silent and letting the more excitable players do their thing.
Second, there is definitely some mechanical fallout from the run I don't agree with. Specifically, Mirage has Code of Honor: Assassin's Creed. Once I realized this was a Pink Mohawk style game, I withdrew my app, since the style and the disad are definitely conflicting. I was assured it would be fine by the GM, so I went along anyway. Result: By rights, I think I gained about 10 more notoriety than was accounted for in the wrap up. Possibly more; possibly less. I honestly stopped counting after 4.

Mirage was shelved for a while, so I made a "Face" style character called "Metatron."

He's been on 2 runs now. Here's the first After Action Report. It's pretty bland...the next one is good, though.

Quote
Player: /u/celondon
Character: Metatron
GM: /u/dekiec
Run: Ten Million Fireflies
BODY: A KE Detective named Fred Wallace contracted a crew to help investigate the recent disappearances in the Underground. Not my favorite area; you can't find a decent set of 400 thread sheets in the entire place. Also, the despair and anger leave a sort of psychic malaise about the place that makes me uncomfortable.
Anyway, Wallace said a dwarf girl had disappeared only 2 days before and he wasn't allowed to head down to do a proper investigation. He wanted us to find the girl and, with any luck, stop the guy doing this. We got as much info as we could from him, negotiated our fee, then set out to find what we could.
I started off by calling up my friend in KE, Det. Thompson. He couldn't give much info on the case itself, but he did verify that Wallace was actually KE and it was his case. So, not a sting op. I hadn't thought so, but it never hurts to check, you know?
While I was doing that, Ruby was doing his matrix magic, trying to track down the missing girls Boyfriend. Mr. Solomon and Doc managed to find the girl (Richelle Potter's) now broken commlink while searching the area she'd disappeared. After some tinkering, he got it working and pulled William "Billy" Gary's commlink codes and used those to trace his current location...which, happened to be in school.
Sawb and I hit the school, bribed our way in to talk to the kid. He told us what had happened from his point of view..which included the girl obviously being Controlled by some sort of magic. Ugly, scary stuff.
Meanwhile, Doc and Solomon had located a door with a hidden sensor in it. The girl seemed to have passed through it. After messing around a bit, we decided to see where it lead.
Did it lead to a pack of ghouls? Of course it did.
I'd have tried to calm them down and bribe our way through, but Solomon used a Lightning Bolts to insta fry one of them. So much for the peaceful solution! It didn't take more than 10 or 12 seconds, and the ghouls were all either dead or fleeing. None of us were hurt, really, so we continued on the way. After a bit, we came across a warded illusionary wall. We passed through it and there she was.
She was stuck up on a platform inside of some sort of glass cage. There was a camera on her and a commlink recording her as she died of dehydration, hunger and stress. Ugly, ugly business.
We got her out of there, got her to a hospital and turned over all the data we'd acquired to Sgt. Gurptooth Gorkass and Det. Wallace, including a picture of the guy we recovered.
Hopefully, that'll be enough to get him caught.
Run Time: 3 3/4 hours
Mission Rewards: 12000 nuyen, 6 karma
Notes: 8/10 It was a lot of fun. A couple minor rough spots, but otherwise good. Creepy story.
Quotes of the session: I love a Decker with Optimism.

Run number 2. This one was some crazy shit...even if no one fired a single shot.

Quote
Player: /u/celondon
Character: Metatron
GM: /u/Ympulse
Run: Specific Incredulity
"Mr. Grey. Yeah, yeah, I know I'm supposed to be on the job. Well, it's done. At least, I think it is. Check your account, your fee should be there.
"What happened? Well, I guess I'll tell it straight, but there's no way you will believe it.
"I met up with a Mage called Karp, some Ancients ganger called Gremlynne and a Mr. Robo Cyberjob by the name of Agony. Good name; looking at him hurt.
"So, we hit the Needle and saw our Johnson, Tanaka, at a table. Big, freaky looking Troll with Jet Black Teeth and eyes. I do my bit, act the professional and try and keep things going well. Works, too. We got a pretty good deal.
"Tanaka told us we were taking a package to Japan. There, we'd meet someone and give them the package. Cakewalk. We asked some questions, got some details and agreed to the job.
"That's when shit got weird.
"Bastard smashed his claws into his own chest, right there and ripped it open! Reached in and yanked out a ruby the size of a damned soccer ball.
"I...tried to play it cool, grab the gem, clean up the scene and skate asap...but my legs and feet weren't working. I guess it was shock. After a couple minutes of gawking, Gremlynne stashed the gem in her helmet and we got out of there.
"Gremlynne then pipes in with a strange look on her face saying we have to hit a dock down in Tacoma. We grabbed a bunch of stuff for the trip, then headed down there.
"What? Tanaka? We left his dead ass there. We couldn't move a 200 kilo troll with a sucking chest wound during the business rush, and, really, none of us were really thinking too straight just then.
"So, Tacoma. Dock. 30 meter yacht waiting for us, provisioned and fueled. No crew. We climbed about, set up shifts, and got underway.
"Oh, I forgot to mention. Karp assensed the ruby. It was "Incredibly powerful and full of evil. Naturally, I decided to stash it next to the bed.
"Yeah, I know. Dumbest thing I've ever heard and it was my idea. There was...I don't know, it was crawling around in my head, making me think things. Scary drek omae.
"Second day out...I couldn't wake up. Something was missing and I was searching for it. Apparently, I was out for twelve hours or something. When I finally did wake up, it was because some huge whale thing was going to ram the boat!
"I'm not sure how, but Karp or Gremlynne or both managed to get us away from it or it let us go or something. I took a hit of Long Haul. No fraggin' way was I going back to sleep while that thing was still around.
"At some point while I was sleeping, they'd moved the gem. Stuck it in a box and lashed it down in the hold.
"We heard a rattling, knocking noise. Incredibly steady, coming from the hold. We looked in...and half the hold was this inky blackness. Nothing could see through it. We closed the door and started theorizing. The best thing we could come up with was that somehow, this thing was sucking everything into some shadowy metaplane somewhere.
"We opened the door...yeah, I know, stupid idea, and the darkness was at the door. It had grown a lot in those few minutes. And still the knocking, rattling sound kept going.
"Karp decided we needed some serious power to help with this. He decided to try and summon a big as spirit...me, being me, offered as much encouragement as I could muster...and the bastard managed to summon what looked like a Leviathan! It engulfed the whole boat...and the darkness, which had been leaking through all over the boat by this point, was washed away.
"But the knocking continued, and the hold was still filled with darkess.
"Karp was hurt and needed sleep. He told us the spirit could hold the darkness back for a while. No, he wasn't too specific, of if he was, I didn't believe him.
"Anyway, it held long enough for him to sleep a bit and, when he woke up, he tried another big summoning. If this one worked and if it could hold as long as the other had, we'd make it to Japan and be able to drop this damned thing on someone else and be rid of it. This time, he managed something that looked like a classic eastern Water Dragon. Nearly killed himself, but he got it.
"That got us to Japan. The boat began driving itself and we found a small Island with the whitest guy you've ever seen. He strolls on board and into the darkness in the hold and a few minutes later, Tanaka come climbing out.
"He thanks us and then...we're standing in the fucking Space Needle, staring at a Japanese man. He says we've insulted him, stands up and storms out.
"I'd swear the whole damned thing was a dream...but the nuyen is in the account. What the hell, man? Oh, I didn't mention the black spots or Agony's plan to rip open his own chest and stuff the gem inside to try and contain it or Gremlynne going full on Captain Ahab for a while.
"What the hell, man? That's just...whatever. I don't know. Anyway, no more jobs for the next couple days. I need to get down from the Long Haul and my nerves are fucked.
"Call me next week if you get something."
Run Time: 3.5 Hours
Mission Rewards 20,000 nuyen (less Taxes), 3 karma
Mission Expenses: 500 nuyen, sundry goods for a week long trip
Notes: Crazy run. Karp summoned a Force 12 Spirit...and the next day, followed this up with a Force 11 Spirit. Soul Eating Blackness. Melon Ballers...just nuts.

Another run; another disaster. I retired Mirage for good after this one.

Quote
Player: [/u/celondon](https://www.reddit.com/user/Celondon/)

Character: [Mirage](https://www.dropbox.com/s/p8uq2evpkprg7 ... e.pdf?dl=0)

Run: Overnight Shipping

GM: [/u/dekiec](https://www.reddit.com/user/dekiec)

I don't know, Jim. Maybe Seattle just isn't for me? First job I get since that Johnny Killblade drekstorm and this is what happens?

It started okay. The meet went relatively smoothly. Mr. Wu was polite, to the point and no one was an utter idiot. He wanted us to disgrace a guy named Alldredge, then have him offed in such a way that few questions would be asked. Additionally, we were to install some software on the host of the dockyards where Alldredge worked.

The first sign of trouble came when Poncho and Fionn tried to negotiate for better pay. Not only did they fail to convince Wu to give us more nuyen, we didn't even get an up front portion.

Fine and good. Wu leaves and we start planning. Somehow, the idea of NOT offing the target and staging his death comes up. I try and squash it but Poncho won't let it go. Lot's of discussion which ends up with us deciding "we'll see what he says when we're talking to him."

Why are we talking to him at all? Our job is to geek the guy, not be his friend!

Whatever, at this point, I'm planning on using these tools to get into position to deal with things myself, at least as far as offing the guy. We decide to scout out the docks.

Security is about what you'd expect. Lot's of camera's, motion sensors, fencing with mono-wire.

And this is where were blew it. Yeah, "we." I don't know what I was thinking. No, wait, I *wasn't* thinking; I was letting the decker and mage "do their thing" and coasting. Big mistake. Papa S, the mage, used his magic to hide Poncho and then levitated him over the fence to one of the cameras where he set up a data tap. He messed around on the Host for a bit and must have tripped something because he jacked out in a hurry.

That's when he noticed the Motion Sensors. The ones he'd tripped while being levitated over the fence. We figured tonight was burned; they'd be too alert to accomplish anything, so we decided to call it, get some sleep and regroup the following night.

Mistake #2.

They were waiting for us. As soon as we were on site and Papa started with the Magic, Fionn heard cars headed our way, fast. Figuring we were blown, again, and we needed to get out and regroup, I immediately activated my RPC and hit cover to get out.

I was halway down the block before I realized Esther and Papa S were still standing there, with two SUV's full of heat staring them down.

I won't go into detail, because a lot of it was hard to see from where I was. Papa used his magic to mess with the heads of some of the cops, Fionn blasted the hell out of another one with his Bike, and drek generally hit the fan. Papa S was captured after ripping through the fence at a dead run, while the others escaped.

The others were still flogging the dead horse trying to figure a way to complete the completely blown job when I messaged you to arrange for me to get out of town for a while. I also messaged Mr. Wu apologizing for the complete, utter failure to get the job done. No response, which is expected.

So, yeah. I'm headed to Hawaii to re-think my priorities. I suggest you lay low for a bit, too. The Triads aren't forgiving and you vouched for me on this job. Sorry, man.

Run Time: 6 hours 30 Minutes

Mission Rewards: 3 Karma

Mission Expenses: Dignity

Highlight: Papa S trying to fool the cops into thinking he's just a random old dude...while wearing a Ballistic Mask

Rating: Easy 3/10 -- The GM was fine and gave us a ton of chances, but the group seemed deadset on doing things the hardest way possible while neglecting basic procedural tasks.

I've been thinking about this for a while, now... Wanna help me put together a character and do some Runnerhubbing, together? We could make a pair of partners or siblings or something.

Like Master Blaster or Batman and Robin (Stephanie)

I'd happily help, but the odds of being picked for the same run are fairly low. Just be aware of that.

Another run. This one is with my newly minted Mage. He was designed for "Pink Mohawk" style games and this game was billed as "Black Trenchcoat" so I knew going in things might be a bit rough...

Run: The Edge of a Knife

Meeting a Johnson in a park in broad daylight does not normally end up with said man dead. This was the first indication that this was not going to be a normal run.

The deceased worked for a Syndicate, likely the Vory, and managed to get some data hijacked by a gang in the Rat's Nest. He offered us 5k up front and another 5k to retrieve his lost data. We asked a few questions, then agreed to the deal.

As he walked away, his head exploded -- sniper shot.

Before his body had stopped moving, Delara's Commlink chirped. It was the guys killer telling us the job was still on and we were still being paid; he was simply tying up the loose end.

We left the body laying there and quickly made our way elsewhere. While sitting in a restaurant (terrible soykaf, but the burger was decent) Vagabond searched the matrix for information we could use while I did a flyby Astrally.

I should mention here that the Barrens, on the Astral, is a terrible, terrible place. It's like floating in a sea of decades of built up anger and despair. Don't go there unless you have to.

Anyway, I got to the place, saw it was warded and had a pretty standard astral security setup with a couple watchers and a middling powerful Water Spirit. I headed back and reported to everyone what I'd found.

We made our way to a motel not far from the target site. Completely automated. I don't suggest using the restroom there. From there we set out our plan. Vagabond, Delara and I would sneak in using my Spirits and Spells to aid us. I would sleaze Vagabond past the ward and he would tap into the host and get the data needed.

Vagabond looped the cameras, Hicks got his drones into position to create a distraction if needed and I summoned a spirit warrior from Valhalla to conceal us. We made our way to the target site.
Everything went well until Delara broke a window a bit too loudly. One of the guards wandered over to investigate and I floated backwards a bit (I was levitating so as not to put too much strain on the delapidated floor) and...backed right into another window which immediately shattered. The guard spotted Delara and the drek hit the fan.

The action was short but brutal. Delara was nearly killed, Hicks Doberman was fried and I burnt the ganger guard who discovered us to a crisp. While the place was still on alert, I managed to get Vagabond through the ward and he did his stuff. Luckily, the spirit and my spells did their work and he was not discovered. Their mage never spotted the spell on the Astral, either.

Data in hand, we left after getting Delara back on her feet enough to run.

We had some trouble at the border; our fake SINs were flagged for further review, but Vagabond managed to hack the scanner while I convinced the pleasant KE Officer to re-check them.

We met up with our new Mr. J who confirmed we had the right data and gave us our final pay. Not the cleanest job ever, but we got it done.

Run Time: 4.5 hours
Mission Rewards: 10,000 Nuyen, 4,000 nuyen for Paydata, 5 Karma
Mission Expenses: -1 Psyche
Notes: We had a good plan and a simple objective. What could possibly go wrong? Answer: Critical Glitch on my Stealth check.
Quotes of the session: "Man, after that, I think I need a BTL!" - Vagabond. This immediately triggered Delara's "Social Stress" and made her really, really not like the rest of the group.

Another run, another 3 Karma! This one went well...finally!

Run: Follow the Yellow Brick Road

It's not everyday you get paid eighteen grand for sitting in a Sports Bar arguing about sports with a bunch of wageslaves, so when an opportunity like that comes along, you really have to enjoy it.

I know I did.

Oh, sure, there was a bit of pocket picking involved, but...Wait, I'll back up.

I was contacted by a Johnson who wanted us to retrieve a set of schedules for a certain project. It was stressed that this had to be quiet and with no trace the job had been done. I was teamed up with a mage calling himself Fizzle and a Decker called Gargoyle. Not bad guys, I'd work with them again.

The meet went smoothly, we got the basics of the job and the Johnson was pretty upfront about things...including the fact that he didn't know which of two facilities was the one that had the data we needed. It could be in Gale Linguistics or it could be in a Novatech facility.

We negotiated and got a good deal for the work, then set about it. Fizzle had an idea about disguising ourselves as Pizza Delivery guys and social engineering our way in from there, but I thought that was iffy -- if things went wrong, we'd blow the "no trace" aspect of the job.

While kicking around other ideas, we ran reckon on both locations. Gale had slightly tougher Magical Security (according to Fizzle) than the Novatech site, and the reverse was true as far as the Matrix was concerned. We decided to try our luck with Gale, first.

Gargoyle got us some good info -- A bunch of the guys from Gale went out for beers after work every Wednesday. We decided we'd lift the manager's keycard, copy it, then use that to infiltrate the building. Since we wanted to reduce exposure, we decided I would stay in the bar with them to keep them there as long as possible while Gargoyle and Fizzle actually did the break in.

From what I gather, there were a couple close calls inside the building, but they managed to get in and out without a problem and without setting of any alarms. Meanwhile, I'd kept the Wageslaves entertained and all was well.

We set up a meet with Mr. Johnson using the pass phrase he'd given us. The exchange was to happen at a local park. There were no shenanigans; everything went smoothly and data and nuyen exchanged hands.

Eighteen grand for drinking beer and bashing the 'hawks. I could use more jobs like this.

Run Time: 4.5 hours
Mission Rewards: 18,000 Nuyen, 3 Karma
Mission Expenses: None
Notes: I bought an Americar after the run; the fact that there were three of us and only had a 2 seater car for the run was actually one of the bigger difficulties of the run. It limited what we could do considerably.

So, there's been a schism in the Leadership of the Runnerhub, resulting in the formation of ShadowNET on Reddit as well. It's essentially the same thing as Runnerhub, just with slightly different rules for GMs. Many of the GMs I've run with have gone over to ShadowNET. I'm trying to decide if I want to switch, or try and play in both communities. Either way, Politics suck.

Sadly, I've about given up on this. Between my schedule and the dearth of games in my time zone, it just isn't working for me any longer. Sad; i had a lot of fun games with these guys.

Goddammit Larry-bot, you got me so excited.  Now, how did you make it past all the filters?
